The Dream trip: Socorro & Magdalena Bay

If you like the following, this trip might be for you:

A Unique Mexico Combo

Mexico is such a diving Valhalla, that divers often tells us its a pity they have to travel quite far and ultimately choose one location in a country that offers so many. This is why we handcrafted a “best of the best” Socorro Magbay combo trip that offers the unique opportunity dive in both of these wildlife hotspots in one single travel. We lack space on this page to truly describe how special this one is.

Socorro Island

The volcanic islands of Revillagigedo form a spectacular underwater theatre in the middle of the Pacific. Its most well known island Socorro, is a magnet for large pelagics such as its legendary oceanic manta’s, tons of sharks, dolphins and big schools of fish. It’s mysterious and humongous underwater rock formations are as spectacular as the animals that surround it. And if that was not enough, there is another HUGE plus: November in Socorro means a very decent shot at whale shark sightings!

Magdalena Bay

The 50km long Magdalena Bay in Mexico’s Baja California is as wild, versatile and thrilling as Socorro, yet the animals encountered there are completely different. Each year in November, it is home to the second biggest sardine migration in the world, attracting big pelagic fish such as marlins and sea lions. The place is a whale hotspot as well, and has the famous mobula ray schools in its arsenal too. Important: due to the fast pace of the bait balls and mammals, the MagBay ocean safari's are snorkelling and freediving only!

Authentic Operators

A trip to Socorro across the Pacific requires a trustworthy and highly professional vessel. Rocio Del Mar is a top boat that cruises the Mexican waters year round and offers exquisite facilities and experienced crews. For the Magdalena Bay expedition, we rely on our top partners in the region, Latitude Encounters. Both operators are known to combine authenticity with extreme professionalism. You will not only enjoy, but learn from these experiences, trust us.

The Best Timing

The chosen time slots are arguably the prime timings to be in both of these iconic dive destinations. It seems logical, but the logistics behind it are not always as easy as it seems. We are proud to have set up everything to connect the quality of the diving to the best possible timing of the year. It is what both our clients and these destinations deserve.

In the Spirit of Behind the Mask

Both destinations have been the subject of our production team’s efforts in the last year. We dove in these areas extensively and were overwhelmed about the diversity in marine life, landscapes, the explorative nature of the diving. We really want other ocean enthusiasts to experience these thrills and spread the ocean message between their friends and family.

This trip is open for everybody

Viewpoints from cultures all over the globe inspire us, that’s why we love bringing people from different backgrounds together. The more diverse, the better we feel.

Mexico 🇲🇽

Mexico is probably the most diverse diving country in the world. Pelagic diving, corals, cenotes, sardine runs: it truly has it all. We are stoked to pick out two cherries on top of the Mexico cake. In addition, Mexico’s natural landscape, food and culture is spicy and rich. It’s just one of these destinations where *everything* fits.

The Dream Trip

We don’t say this one often, unless it is truly deserved and appropriate, but this is trip is truly a ‘dream trip’. If you have been waiting for an adventure of a lifetime for a while, this is a pretty safe bet. It’s fast, slow, hot and cold all at the same time. No idea what to make of this description? Come find out for yourself.

Rocio del Mar is custom-designed for diving the waters on Mexico’s west coast and in the Sea of Cortez.  The owners know this region well and wanted a vessel that was large, stable and comfortable.  Rocio is the result.  She isn’t a luxury vessel, but she has 4 decks and plenty of comfortable living space.  On the top deck you’ll find a good-sized sundeck, with lounge chairs set up in covered and uncovered areas, plus a great bar & barbecue area and an al fresco dining area for meals, when the weather permits. The upper deck houses 2 large staterooms, the indoor salon and dining area … plus a spacious, covered & protected outdoor salon on the aft deck. The dive deck is located on the main deck along with the other 8 staterooms.

The dive deck is ample and well-designed, with plenty of room for gear and a large camera table for photographers. Nitrox is available and a satellite phone is available onboard for emergencies.

Latitude Encounters are a team of ocean-loving, experienced adventurers.

Led by Mexican Fernanda and Belgian Mathias, Latitude consists of a team of scuba and freedivers with over 10 years in the dive and tourism industry. They joined forces to create Latitude, a company where they can share everything they’ve learned interacting with the ocean with one goal in mind:  to give you the opportunity to experience wildlife in a way you never thought possible! Adventure, safety and respect are the main pillars of their operation. We as Behind the Mask were stunned by the professionalism and ocean knowledge of this extremely talented group of people, and are honoured to partner with them for this trip!
