If you like the following, this trip might be for you:
Magdalena Bay 🇲🇽
Each year in November, Magdalena Bay is home to the second biggest sardine migration in the world, attracting big pelagic fish such as marlins and sea lions. The place is a whale hotspot too, and has the famous mobula ray schools cruising through. We are crossing the Atlantic with a purpose: experience the Mexican bait ball frenzy!
Snorkel & Freediving 🪨
Magbay is a primarily a snorkeling and freediving destination because its incredible marine life, like striped marlins and bait balls, is found near the surface, making tanks unnecessary. The fast-paced action and the need to quickly maneuver in the water are better suited for the agility that freediving and snorkeling offer.
Our Top Tripleader 🌊
Our very own Peter Löseke is a German underwater cinematographer and experienced diver known for his video productions and epic diving trips. He has acquired an incredible underwater knowledge, and is even better at sharing them! We are lucky to have him lead this trip.
Authentic Operators 🛥️
The Gallant Lady is a luxury liveaboard dive boat operated by Nautilus, offering intimate adventures with a maximum of 12 guests for a personalized experience. It features spacious cabins, gourmet dining, and top-notch amenities, ensuring comfort between dives.
Anything Can Happen 🐋
MagBay is a front-row seat to nature’s underwater drama! Not just the sea lions and the marlins steal the show, but occasionally whales, tuna, bonito and even mahi mahi come in to hunt the bait balls. In a place as vibrant, any encounter can happen! This area is alive.
Extended Chance ⚡
The MagBay season is short, that's why trips here usually don't run that long. This 12 night adventure gives you a unique chance to not just get a quick, good encounter, but an absolute stunning one. Time to get up and close, and space to be best prepared.
Top of our Range
Magbay is at the absolute top of our range price quality wise. High end interaction at an affordable rate, and with the Gallant Lady on a top vessel!
Mexico 🇲🇽
Mexico is probably the most diverse diving country in the world. Pelagic diving, corals, cenotes, sardine runs: it truly has it all. We are stoked to pick one of the cherries on top of the Mexico cake with MagBay. In addition, Mexico’s natural landscape, food and culture is spicy and rich. It’s just one of these destinations where *everything* fits.
A Special One
"Having been last year, I was overwhelmed by the absolute stunning biodiversity in this Baja region. I am beyond thrilled to take 11 people on this adventure of a lifetime, in one of the ocean hotspots in the world. Let's freaking go!"

Day 1 – Board and Get Underway
Meet at SeeCreatures Cabo by 5 pm for the short transfer to embark your ship. Board and set sail up the coast of Baja for the approximately 15 hour run to Magdalena Bay. The sea is usually calm and sheltered inside the bay and barrier islands where we anchor at night. Please note that our interaction with the bait balls of the sardine run is in the open Pacific Ocean.
Day 2 – Welcome to Magdalena Bay!
Late morning arrival in Magdalena Bay. Today is our warmup and tuneup day at the south end of Margarita Island. While this adventure is primarily about snorkelling and free diving with the schooling sardine and bait balls, you will have the opportunity to snorkel with sea lions, and weather permitting, dive on the remains of a large passenger ship that sank more than 200 years ago all well as the wreck of a WW1 submarine.
Days 3 – 11 Enjoy Peak Season of Mag Bay
Let’s fine some bait balls! Our spotter airplane will be up in the air for the first couple days of your trip. These next days are about snorkelling and freediving. Not scuba diving. We never know quite what Mother Ocean has in store for us, but on the vast majority of our trips, we are able to enjoy fairly calm seas with a low swell and loads of critters. Striped marlin and bryde whales are the stars of the sardine run but there is lots more to sea. This is a cooperative eco-tourism program working with local pangas and captains who pivoted from fishing to tourism. Nobody knows these waters and where to find the animals better than these guys. You should also see turtles, more sea lions, sharks, and seabirds. It can be very very exciting.
Day 12
Our spare day for bait balls in case we had inclement weather during the week. Otherwise this is our day to do some scuba diving and also go ashore in the amazing giant sand dunes of Margarita Island. Departing for Cabo mid- afternoon on what is almost always a pleasant downhill ride with gentle motion.
Day 13 – Breakfast & Disembark
Breakfast and then disembark in Cabo by 8:30 am.
